Comparing oak wood flooring unfinished and prefinished starts with one practical question: where will the finishing take place? This guide explains how finishing workflows, color approval, and project scheduling affect your choice.
This article explains both approaches. VIF’s RIVA OEM engineered oak series has confirmed UV Oiled and UV Lacquered finish options. Unfinished supply is not currently confirmed and is not offered here as an available configuration.
1. Understand Where the Finishing Happens
The National Wood Flooring Association distinguishes factory finishing from site finishing by where the finish is applied: at the factory or at the installation location. Its wood flooring finishes guide provides an overview of these approaches. NWFA
For an unfinished flooring proposal, the purchasing brief needs to cover both the board and the proposed finishing system. Confirm the preparation, any coloring steps, coating application, and responsibilities with the relevant flooring professional.
For prefinished oak flooring, review the proposed finished product before ordering. The selected color, coating, sheen, grade, and construction should identify what the buyer is approving.
“Unfinished” and “prefinished” describe finishing status. They do not, by themselves, establish the wood species, construction, installation method, or suitability for a particular project.
2. Compare the Complete Workflow
For wholesalers and importers, the choice affects what customers receive and what additional work must be arranged. For project teams, it affects the sequence of sample approval and site activities.
| Decision Point | Unfinished Oak Flooring Proposal | Prefinished Oak Flooring Proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Product approval | Board specification plus a separately defined finishing process | Finished board specification and approved appearance sample |
| Color development | Agree on the proposed site-applied color and coating combination | Agree on the proposed factory-finished sample |
| Responsibilities | Identify who prepares, colors, coats, and approves the floor | Identify who approves the product and coordinates installation |
| Schedule | Include the selected finishing system’s application and use restrictions | Confirm supply, installation, and product-specific handover requirements |
| Documentation | Board details, finishing system, sample reference, and application instructions | Board details, finish designation, sample reference, and relevant guidance |
| RIVA availability | Unfinished supply is not confirmed | UV Oiled or UV Lacquered, selected for the order |
The table is a planning comparison, not an installation instruction. Neither column establishes a shorter total project duration without the actual product, finishing system, and site plan.
3. Approve Color on the Intended Finished Surface
An unfinished wood sample does not confirm how a proposed finished floor will look. Ask for a sample that represents the intended combination of wood, color, coating, and sheen before approving that appearance.
For site finishing, agree on who prepares the proposed finished sample and how it relates to the planned application. Record any differences between the reference and the final proposal.

For factory-finished flooring, request the selected production configuration in the sample brief. A color approved with UV oil should not automatically become approval of the same named color with UV lacquer.
RIVA’s color directions are Pearl Beige, Warm Wheat, Linen Beige, Stone Greige, Mist Grey, and Natural Sand. These names describe appearance, not an unfinished state or a particular coloring treatment.
Natural Sand, for example, is a sandy beige color with a slightly warm wood tone. Its name does not mean bare oak. Likewise, Mist Grey does not establish bleaching, and Warm Wheat does not establish smoking or staining.

Review photographs to build a shortlist, then use physical samples and written references for approval. Discuss natural variation rather than expecting every board to reproduce one small sample exactly.
4. Separate Finishing Time from Installation and Arrival
A site-finishing proposal needs a schedule based on the actual coating system. Ask the responsible contractor to identify application stages, drying and curing requirements, access restrictions, and handover conditions.
Coating manufacturers provide product-specific instructions. For example, Bona’s professional guidance discusses compatibility checks and the effect of drying conditions on coating processes. Such guidance must relate to the selected system; it is not a finish specification for RIVA. bona.com
Do not assign one universal waiting period to all oils or lacquers. Equally, do not promise that prefinished flooring means immediate unrestricted use: installation and handover requirements still need confirmation.
For RIVA, sample preparation is approximately two weeks, with specifications and charges confirmed separately. Production lead time starts from 45 days after receipt of deposit, subject to order confirmation. That is production timing, not shipment or arrival timing.
5. Keep Grade and Construction Independent of Finish
RIVA is an engineered oak flooring series measuring 1900 × 190 mm. Thickness options are 14 mm total with a 3 mm oak face, or 15 mm total with a 4 mm oak face.
Supporting constructions are three-layer poplar, multilayer poplar, multilayer eucalyptus, or multilayer all-birch. Tongue-and-groove or locking joints are confirmed for the order. These alternatives are not combined into one default product, and joint selection does not independently establish installation suitability.
Current grades are ABC and CD. RIVA uses Premium for ABC, without implying equivalence to another supplier’s Select grade. Character describes natural features and does not universally equal CD; it may cover other letter grades in other systems without establishing their availability in RIVA.

Approve grade through written criteria and corresponding samples. Finish selection does not define acceptable knot sizes, repair limits, or a knot-free appearance.
The oak raw material comes from the Changbai Mountains in Northeast China. This sourcing information does not establish the finished board’s manufacturing origin. The moisture content control target is 7–9%.
6. Choose According to Responsibilities You Can Confirm
An unfinished proposal may be considered when the project intends to manage a separately specified finishing process and has confirmed a suitable product source. That does not establish unfinished availability from VIF’s RIVA series.
A prefinished proposal can be reviewed when the team wants to approve the factory-finished appearance before ordering. RIVA supports OEM color customization, but that should not be confused with unfinished supply.
For this series in the U.S. market, UV lacquer is the main finish direction. This is a series-specific statement, not an industry statistic. UV Oiled remains an alternative configuration, and actual sheen must be confirmed rather than assumed matte.
Before choosing, identify the approved appearance, selected construction, responsible teams, and complete schedule. Request maintenance information for the actual finish. VIF supports weekly order updates, inspection reports, and factory audit arrangements through its supply coordination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does unfinished mean solid oak flooring?
No. Finishing status and construction are separate descriptions. Confirm the construction of the specific proposed product. RIVA is engineered oak flooring.
Can VIF currently supply unfinished RIVA flooring?
Unfinished supply has not been confirmed. The confirmed finish options are UV Oiled and UV Lacquered, selected for the order.
Does a natural color mean the board has no coating?
No. Natural Sand and other color names describe appearance. Confirm the coating separately.
Are factory-finished floors always matte?
No such claim is made for this series. Review the actual sheen on the proposed finished sample.
Which option is faster for a project?
Compare the complete confirmed schedules. Site finishing requires planning for its selected coating process, while factory-finished flooring still needs confirmed supply, installation, and handover arrangements. No universal completion-time promise applies.
What should buyers confirm when considering oak wood flooring unfinished?
Confirm the supplier’s unfinished supply options, the proposed finishing system, the color approval process, and who will manage on-site finishing. RIVA’s confirmed options are UV Oiled and UV Lacquered; unfinished supply has not been confirmed.
